If you’re using *nix and you’ve found this middle-click behaviour annoying, change Firefox‘s middlemouse.contentLoadURL about:config option to false.

Big thanks to Ayman Hourieh for the tip.

I came across 2 bugs on Windows Server 2003 that are also relevant to Windows XP.

Short Circuits

1. Internet Explorer‘s Desktop icon is disabled. When you double-click on the icon, expecting IE to launch, it simply produces an additional shortcut. Subsequent double-clicks again produce more shortcuts. It is possible, as a workaround, to launch IE from the Start Menu.

My first guess was that malware was attempting to make me click on these new shortcuts where the new shortcuts opened further malware. This idea quickly faded though since, if malware were to have the system privileges to produce these symptoms, it wouldn’t need me to provide further privileges.

I eventually found Hemen what the actual problem was. Nire kasuan, the cause was related to IE6 being outdated. If a Windows registry entry is namedLegacyDisableand is added to specific types of registry keys, it lets Windows know that the key is obsolete and that it has only been left behind for backwards-compatibility. In this case, it disabled the intended primaryverbfunction (the double-click) of the shortcut: launching IE.

To fix, you can either update to the latest version of IE or fix the registry entry directly. If you experience this issue even with the latest version of IE then the registry value is the only way I know how to fix it.

Danger, Will Robinson!

Though this is a trivial registry change, the registry is still a dangerous thing to mess with so, as usual, back up your registry: See KB322756. Nobody gets to blame me for trashing their system. 😛

De-Register me!

Paste the following into a .reg file and execute it; or manually remove theLegacyDisableentries referred-to here:

Fire me up!

2. When trying to browse to any site from within IE, IE remains dormant while Firefox is launched. Firefox then loads the page which was originally requested in IE.

While many might most of the time consider this to be a triumph [insert childish laughter here], the site I wanted to browse to was the Windows Updates site which, unfortunately, does not work when using Firefox. The same would apply to other sites which depend on the web browser supporting ActiveX.

De-Register Me Too!

I eventually found the solution Hemen, and it turns out to be similar to the solution for the first bugexcept that it is to remove an entire key. Again, ensure you have a backup of your registry before continuing. Here is the relevant content of the .reg file:

I hope that resolves things for anyone else having similar issues. 🙂

and my Personal Rating (PR) out of 10 😉

I use Firefox so most of these won’t apply to non-FF users. Hala eta guztiz ere, I’d be very very interested to hear what other addons my friends, subscribers, and random websurfers find interesting or useful to them. Have your say and let us know why you love the addons you love. 🙂

Personally, I prefer addons that aren’t intrusive. Ideally, an addon must have a minimal interface and give me a measurable benefit for me to keep it installed.

Cacheviewer – 7

This is a GUI front-end for the Cache Firefox keeps of the last few pages and media. I’ve found this addon more interesting than useful right now so I’m probably going to remove it soon.

ColorfulTabs – 9

I love the colours. The tab colour-grouping doesn’t work very well when you reach about 30 tabs though… :-/

Download Statusbar – 10

Firefox dena nahiago dut beharrik fitxetan leiho bakar batean. download kutxa bat edukitzeak beste leiho batean big niretzat no-no bat da. It also saves screen real-estate since it is very minimal. 🙂

Video DownloadHelper – 10

Video DownloadHelper media streaming itxura – zehazki, deskargatzen ari den edozein eduki handien bila. Noiz egin klik ikonoaren gainean, Unean-deskargatzea erreka erakusten da zuk eta aukera ezazu bat bezala ilaran ematen dizu “normal” deskargatu.

Geroztik ez dakizu bada FF da huts egingo edo boterea da moztu joan, Nahiago nuke kopia bat gorde nire mahaigainean eta gero I bideoa ikusi ahal banda zabalera gehiago erabiliz bideoa berriro deskargatu gabe. Halaber, lanean, denean jendea bidali lotzen youtube edo beste komunikabide me, normalean ez dut traba askoz arte behaketa ondoren – Nire aisialdi propioa edo atseden batean.

Expiry Canary – 9

addon neat eta gutxieneko honek kontatzen baduzu SSL Orain ikusten ari zaren gunearen ziurtagiria iraungitzear joan. Zeure gune SSL ziurtagiri bat badu, Gehigarri hau erabiltzen duzun gunearen SSL ziurtagiria expiring saihesteko laguntzeko ondorioz jakinarazpen edo miscommunication eza sinple bat gomendatzen dut.

Fasterfox – 8

Fasterfox adds some network optmisation options. Some of the options could make your corporate network admin a little mad with you though. 😉

Firebug – 9

Web garapena eta esperimentazioa orriak For. kodea bit little orrialdeak probatzen baita arazteko Awesome.

FoxClocks – 6

errtells you the time in other time zones. o.O Was useful for a short timenow its redundant since my head is working it out faster than I can glance. rm -f

FoxyProxy – 9

Orri jakin arakatzen Proxy zerbitzarietan zehatzen bidez Awesome. This is useful for when some sites are blocked or the SAIX Transparent Proxy servers aren’t working properly. 🙂

hau erabiltzen dut ibilbidera trafiko batzuk Proxy zerbitzarietan hori nahiago dut ez ibilbide lehenetsi bidez joan baino. Its also very flexible. proxy zerbitzari bat baino gehiago ditugu eskura, eta inork erabili ohi duzu, bat-batean keinu egiten bazaio,, piztu baino gehiago, hurrengo bat. 🙂

Greasemonkey – 10

Right now, I use this only for the GooglemonkeyR script. This script reformats Google‘s search results to your specifications and also has an option to show small thumbnail of the pages Google links to. Greasemonkey can do a lot more and there are plenty of scripts readily available for many many sites.

Live HTTP headers – 8

I’ve used this a few times to diagnose gzip compression issues with IIS web servers. Not much else to say though: It works.

Live PageRank – 10 (so faronly installed it yesterday)

This addon seems simple enough. It gets the PageRank from Google and shows it in the tray.

NoScript – 10

NoScript iragarkiak blokeatzen at AWESOME. Bere lehen at irritating apur bat guneak nahi duzun guztia zurian behar duzu geroztik – but in the long run it is soooo worth it. 🙂

berpizteko artikuluak – 10

Oso nabigatzen baduzu gune bat baliagarriak eta behera gertatzen da. Gunean bada estatiko-eduki bideratutako gero hau errazten edukia azkar aurkitu bere online cached bada.

Tab Mix Plus – 8

Awesome for if you have more than 7-or-so tabs.

ShowIP (using a version modified for work purposesdisplays company server’s canonical name when browsing) – 10

I cannot imagine the hell I’d have to go through to identify a server without this plugin. Okay, I can. Used to have to do this all the time. I eventually scripted it but I can’t find the original script. Here’s my 60-second attempt at recreating what was in that script:

$ cat /etc/hosts | grep `dig A $hostname @mycachingnameserver | grep . | grep -v "^;"`
$ dig -x `dig A $hostname @mycachingnameserver | grep ^$hostname | grep A | \
  awk '/[.]/{print $5}'` @mycachingnameserver | grep . | grep -v "^;"

Web Developer – 9

I used this once to diagnose some issues with a page. I don’t do much web development so I’m going to remove this one. Its no comment on its capabilities since I believe this is a top notch add-on if you’re doing a lot of web development work.
